History
The Boys’ Brigade is the world’s premier voluntary youth organisation founded in Glasgow by Sir William Alexander Smith on 4th October 1883.
In 1905 the Brigade came to Southport and in June 1946 with six companies the Southport & District Battalion was formed. Over the past 50 years new companies have continued to be established and others closed.
In 1962 the 10th Southport Company was formed at Marshside Road Methodist Church and continues to meet at the same location 52 years later. The Church is now known as Cornerstone Methodist Church.
There have been five Captains of the 10th Southport Company, Colin Hickson, Chris Mowatt, Steve Williamson, Kay Owen and the current Captain Frank Evans.
Throughout its 52 year life, the 10th have entered many BB competions, both locally and nationally (the most notable being our victory in National BB Band competition in 1997).
Each year, the company has been on an Annual Camp to various places around the country and abroad. The camps were both under canvas, in Church halls and at the Boys’ Brigade North West Centre in Kirkham.
After years of reducing numbers, the 10th is going through a revival with numbers increasing in all sections – Anchors, Juniors and Company. In 2018, the former 5th Southport Girls’ Brigade joined with the Boys’ Brigade and the 10th Company was renamed the 10th Southport Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Association.
The company has maintained the tradition of holding an Annual display every year since its inception.
